Using the Mother Tongue
The Mother Tongue as a Resource in the Foreign Language Classroom

Correction Exercise

Type of Class : monolingual, multilingual
Teacher : doesn't need to know students' mother tongue
Level : all levels
Purpose: to focus on common errors

  • Identify the learner errors you want to work on.
  • Make a correct sentence in TL for each error.
  • Dictate the sentences in TL but ask the students to write them only in MT. If you have pairs of students with shared mother tongue they can compare their sentences at this point.
  • Students then translate their sentences back into TL .

Example:

Advanced French speaker
Problem - Before to start.
Dictated sentence.

    Before starting I want to go over what we did last time
Student's sentence
    Avant de commencer je voudrais ...................
