What is plagiarism?

Plagiarism is failing to mention the sources that you have used in your essay invades “academic honesty”. It is an educational crime! It is copying someone else’s work or a part of your work without mentioning their name. It is known as plagiarism. In simple words, it means stealing someone’s work.

In-text citation

Direct Citation means using the exact words of another writer in our own.

In this case the sentences should be put in the quotation mark. The writer’s name along with the date of publication of the source used and number of the page that the quotation has been taken from should be mentioned in the text.

Indirect citation (paraphrasing) means Including another person’s words in your own. You keep the original meaning, but present it in a new form and indirectly.

In this case the sentences should not be put in the quotation mark. The writer’s name and the date of publication of the source used should be mentioned in the text.

  • Task 3, question 7
Surnames of the writers and their initials. (year of publication). Title of the book. place of publication: publisher’s name

What is a reference list?

  • Reference list is the list of all the materials/sources that have been used (book, journal, magazine, newspaper, website, and so on) in writing a piece. It allows readers to locate original sources.
  • It consists of the author’s surname(s), and initials; year of publication of the material; title of the book, article, …; edition (if applicable); place of publication, name of the publisher and if online the link and date of access.
  • It is organized alphabetically.
  • It usually comes at the end of the work.

What does a reference list consist of?

  • A reference list consists of the authors’ surname(s), and initials; year of publication of the material; title of the book, article, …; edition (if applicable); place of publication, name of the publisher and if online the link and date of access.
  • It is organized alphabetically.
  • It usually comes at the end of the work.

What is Harvard Style?

  • There are several ways for citing sources in a piece of work. At WIUT Harvard style is used.
  • Harvard Reference list citation for books usually follows this format:

Author’s last name, First Initial. (Year published). Title. City: Publisher, Page(s).

  • Task 4 Part 1

Taylor, S. (2005). Communication for Business: a practical approach. Harlow, England: Pearson, Longman

  • Task 4 Part 2

Bassey (1986, p18) looks at “change” and improvement as the search for “right decision”, while Burns (1994, p34) looks for “a process of improvement and reform”. Both have valuable insights to assist a new student of research.

Final Remarks

  • Refer to your Harvard Style booklet (2015/ 16) whenever you are referencing.
  • Referencing is not only limited to books. If you are using articles, illustrations, photos, Internet sources, … you still have t acknowledge the source. Each has its own rules.
  • You may use different soft-wares and apps for referencing. The most famous ones are REFme and Endnote. Remember that these soft-wares are very helpful; however, when using them you still should double check the final reference list. This is to make sure that it follows the guidelines provided in the Harvard booklet.
