Parallel Poems

Paul Bress and Mario Rinvolucri, UK

In HLT Nov 2006 Paul Bress wrote a poem (see below left) and this prompted Mario Rinvolucri to write a companion piece (see below right).

Parallel Poems

Paul Bress and Mario Rinvolucri

Bress Rinvolucri
Remember the students' names Remember your own full name
Remember their nationalities Remember where you come from
Remember to tell them this and that Remember to listen to their words
Remember to bring your handouts Remember to ask for their thoughts
Remember to fill in the register Remember to feel each absence
Remember to record what you've taught Remember to record what they've said
Remember to follow the programme Remember to follow their rhythm
Remember the code for the staff room and photocopier Remember the keys that unlock them
Remember your user name and password Remember just who you are
Remember to check your emails Remember to check who they are
Remember to attend staff meetings Remember that gossip is empty
Remember what you are told to do there Remember that you teach this class
Oh, I almost forgot, Oh, I'll never forget
Remember to live. Just how richly I live.
