Guided Writing Poems

submitted and edited by Phil Doran, UK

Menu

Background
Haiku poems
Eumyul, a Korean poetic form

Background

The poems grew out of a guided writing session, where I use standard line- by-line generator devices to enable students to create poems or mini-sagas. I ask the students (in a one-to-one class) to respond to evocative situations and use their senses etc. Then we explore strict forms such the limerick, the acrostic and the haiku. Writers often respond when given a set of restrictions that challenge and encourage. Min Park herself offered up the traditional Korean form as an equivalent to the Japanese one. I suggested she use the Harvest festival theme. I "edited" to the extent that I helped with syllable counting, stress patterns, rhythm and syntax. The first three pieces were written by Min Park. This last one was done by Eva from Croatia.
