Readers Letters

Letter 1

Dear Hania,

I am happy to let you know that HLT has been accepted for indexing at "Genamics JournalSeek" (http://journalseek.net/).

As a student who has been reading HLT for a long time and as a researcher who has recently started publishing articles on HLT, I suggested HLT for indexing at Genamics last year and after reviewing papers published so far, Genamics decided to index HLT.

It is good to see HLT on international research databases and indexes like DOAJ and finally Genamics.

All the best,

Abdullah Coskun Abant Izzet

Letter 3

Dear family, friends, colleagues and contacts
This is to let you know that instead of sending out cards for Christmas / Chanukah / the Winter Solstice this year, I have sent a donation to www.goodgifts.org to pay for the modernisation of a village hut in rural Africa by providing a solar cooker/water heater and solar frying pan.

At the same time, let me take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and a healthy 2011. May it be both a spiritually and emotionally rewarding year, and I hope at the end of it we will all be able to say that it was one well spent.

Sincerely Michael (Old Baldy) www.Thestoryteller.org.uk

…what they said about the New Year
…what they said about the New Year

CHARLES LAMB

No one ever regarded the First of January with indifference. It is that from which all date their time, and count upon what is left. It is the nativity of our common Adam.

THOMAS HOOD

And ye, who have met with Adversity’s blast,
And been bow’d to the earth by its fury;
To whom the Twelve Months, that have recently pass’d
Were as harsh as a prejudiced jury –
Still, fill to the future! and join in our chime,
The regrets of remembrance to cozen,
And having obtained a New Trial of Time,
Shout in hopes of a kindlier dozen.

MARK TWAIN

Yesterday everybody smoked his last cigar, took his last drink and swore his last oath. Today, we are a pious and exemplary community. Thirty days from now, we shall have cast our reformation to the winds and gone to cutting our ancient shortcomings considerably shorter than ever.

A Happy New Year

Letter 6

Dear English Teacher
December's come and the end of the year will soon be here - and with it our young learners' favourite festival, Christmas!
May we suggest you download and teach your kids the much loved action song I Love Christmas? It's very easy to learn. After you've taught it you can then photocopy and make use of the 9 song-related graded worksheets and activities that come with the action package. I Love Christmas is great for school performance in front of parents.
FunSongs offers you a fresh, new Christmas song for your classroom - an alternative to the usual Jingle Bells and other Christmas classics we all a little tired of.
Children love to sing and perform I Love Christmas. It does not contain the difficult and uncommon vocabulary of many traditional Christmas songs. Check out a video of a primary school class singing the song in class and see for yourself.

If you're in Italy or Latvia why not organize a FunSongs Christmas Show with mother-tongue actors and bilingual puppetry at your school. FunSongs can currently offers its eighteen different shows to schools in Emilia Romagna, Italy and in the Riga region of Latvia - so if you teach there please contact us for bookings. Good ones for early 2011 are the FunSongs Winter Show and the FunSongs Easter Spring Show.
Finally, if you haven't already, please register with FunSongs. It's completely free. All registrants have the right to download the action song package Time to Play.
We wish all the best in your work for December 2010 and of course a Very Happy Christmas!

Best wishes
Steffi Laake and Charles Goodger

Hello Hanna,

This is Luz Maria Salas Godina from Durango Mexico, I work in the "Universidad Juarez del Estado de Durango (UJED)" I finish my MA in ELT Online with the University of Southampton, now I am writing my dissertation and it is base on The Lexical Approach. I will try to answer the following questions "Is the Lexical Approach an appropriate methodology for developing student fluency? Is the Lexical approach an appropriate methodology that will help students to develop their ability to use English in everyday situations?

I read your article "Why I won’t say good-bye to the Lexical Approach" and I think that is a very good article. I will try to adapt some of your activities from "chunking for beginners (Lexical Approach).

My idea is to prove that The Lexical Approach will help students to improve their fluency and interaction in everyday situation. I am trying to adapt some activities from some links for instance yours old.hltmag.co.uk/mar03/less.htm, and old.hltmag.co.uk/mar03/less.htm and of course some ideas from Michael Lewis’s books. I will have a control group and experimental group with one group I am going to use The Lexical Approach and with the control group the usual teaching syllabus. My problem is that the information that I read from different sources talk about the implementation of the Lexical Approach in the classroom, but I could not find some literature that tells me how to assess their improvement.

My question for you is: Do you know some instruments in order to assess students' improvement? Could you share them with me?

Thanks in advance Hanna, I hope you can help me.

Luz Ma.
