Sing hot and cold

Ages 6 – 10
Time 5 minutes
Materials A small, hideable object
Focus Pronunciation (especially rhythm and rhyme)

This is a lively, fun musical game for getting everybody involved just at the end of a lesson. It's also great for reviewing songs (four or so).

Preparation
1 Choose a small object familiar to your pupils, a small box or an eraser, for example. 2 If you think your pupils may not recall the words of the song, write them in full on the board.

Procedure
1 On the board, list the titles of some English songs whose melodies and lyrics your pupils know fairly well.
2 Explain the rules of the game. (See Steps 3-6.)
3 Send one pupil out of the classroom.
4 Hide the object somewhere in the room.
5 Call the pupil in again. As soon as s/he enters, the class start singing the English songs that are mentioned on the board. The closer the 'seeker' gets to the hidden object, the louder the class will sing; the farther, the quieter. From these clues the pupil should be able to find the hidden object.

Variation
With older pupils, you may find that setting a time limit livens things up—that is, the object must be found before all the songs have been sung through.
