Lesson outlines

Number guessing

Ages 6-12
Time 5 minutes
Materials None
Focus Numbers

This is a surprisingly exciting game and pupils may get so caught up in it that they forget that English is the main purpose of the lesson. Occasionally, pupils forget their own number so don't forget to mention this potential pitfall in advance

Procedure

  1. Tell the class that they are going to practise saying numbers within a certain range (e.g., whole numbers under 50).
  2. Invite one of the pupils to the front. This pupil writes a number on a slip of paper (but does not show it) or, if you have a free-standing board, on its back. Tell the pupil to make sure s/he remembers the number because s/he cannot look at it again.
  3. The pupil at the front calls on other pupils, one at a time, to guess the number. Thus, one pupil might guess, "Is it 48?". The pupil at the front can only answer "More", "Less" or "Yes!"

Variations
This activity may also be used to review fractions too. Just make it clear, beforehand, what kind you want to focus on. .
