COURSE OUTLINE

From the author
Dear Hania, I hope this email finds you well. My name is Thelma and I'm from Brazil. I took the course: Successful Pronunciation Learning and Teaching with Adrian Underhill last August (2012). I still recall listening to your words of encouragement and welcome on the first day. That's why I decided to write you a note. Please, find it attached to this email. Thank you. T.M.

Feedback from Pronunciation Course Taken in August 2012 with Adrian Underhill

Thelma Marques, Brazil

A Thank-You Note

My name is Thelma Marques and I was the only Brazilian teacher taking the Pronunciation Course given by Adrian Underhill, in August 2012, in Canterbury. It was my first experience studying abroad and, despite the fact that the course lasted only one week, I can say that it was one of the greatest experiences of my life as a teacher and a student. Not only because I had the opportunity to meet and share experiences with 22 teachers from all over the world, but also due to the tutor, Adrian Underhill, to whom I still get in touch, and whose humanistic approach transformed the way I teach pronunciation.

It's been a while since I came back with my mind full of new ideas and techniques and finally, at the end of January (2013), I started putting Adrian's ideas into practice with other teachers. I invited a group of teachers from São Paulo, my hometown, to present the phonemic chart and introduce the 44 sounds of English using what I've learned that week. Right after that, I gave the same course to 50 teachers from a language institute located in the South of Brazil. The reaction was the same: it changed the way they saw pronunciation. I've never received so many "thank you, teacher" before.

So, thank you Adrian and thank you Pilgrims for opening my mind into a whole new world of teaching English.
