Those Who Were Learners

Rossy Aguirre, Mexico

Rossy is a teacher at the Secundaria Tec de Monterrey in Zacatecas, Mexico. At this bilingual school she teaches English, theater, and health and wellness.

You’ll think that teaching is easy
And if you love what you do It is.

Many asked if you enjoy it,
You’re answer gently shows you do.

There are many ways of showing that it is your call or destiny,
But one act of love will brighten your day

That day when a student all grown up, goes up on stage to receive the last diploma from your hand.

That day when you meet her as a mother
Happily holding a Little hand taking her/him to school.

That day when you see them smiling with
a bunch of Friends
Celebrating their great graduation Day.

Then on the quiet room in front of the fire place
At home
Those stories run through your mind,
the memories passing by
all those faces, all those stories, all your students
here and there, up and down, now and then.

Your face shining with the light of the fireplace
Warm and glowing
Suddenly a tear falls from your cheek
And then your soul feels free.

I’m free, I accomplished my duty
I’m done with my job.
This is my liberation day.
When you see those who were learners,
Now teaching their own way.
