Hi Hania,

Just to let you know I have been working to update my website and hoping it is working OK.

If you had time to go into www.carolgriffiths.net and tell me how it is, especially if there are any problems, I would be glad to hear from you

I have put half a dozen articles on it, and, of course, if anyone wants any others, please let me know.

Heading for NZ soon. Weather has been very bad, so I hope they do something about that before I get there.

Best wishes, Carol Griffiths

Hi Hania,

I work for SightWords.com, a provider of free educational resources for teaching children to read. We have just introduced a great new curriculum, sponsored by the Georgia Preschool Association, for teaching Phonemic Awareness (also called Pre-Phonics) to children. Would you please post a link to us ( www.sightwords.com/phonemic-awareness/) on your website? Our site is packed with games, activities, and tools to help parents and educators prepare children for learning to read.

Our free and printable materials are designed to promote learning in the classroom and also at home. The site's features include:

  • A Curriculum covering the full range of Phonological and Phonemic Awareness
  • Classroom-tested Lessons based on the latest research, complete with “how-to” videos
  • Printable picture cards, word lists, and game boards
  • Teaching Tips for tailoring games to the specific needs of your students

I appreciate your help in letting people know about this great new resource!

Hello, Hania!

I'm Teresa Almeida d'Eca based in Portugal, a retired EFL teacher. I wrote an article for your magazine several years ago when Mario Rinvolucri was still in charge.

I have just read Ruben Correia's article, "Classroom Anxiety and Young Language Learners". It's very interesting and there are a couple of things I'd like to comment with him, as well as send him a work I wrote back in 1995 and self-published on my website several years ago.

Is it possible to give me his email address? I think we have lots in common and that he'd enjoy what I have to show him.

I could write for HLT about my Pronunciation Made Easy (for Portuguese-speaking learners of English) e-dictionary, which I self-published in September 2014. It's based on a strategy that bridges the L1 and the L2. It worked wonders with hundreds of students of mine. And I've been wondering if it works for other native languages and English. Do you think you could help me with feedback about the use of sounds of your language to teach English pronunciation?

You're very welcome to take a look at the website and download a free sample.

Film in Action by Kieran Donaghy has received yet another glowing review, this time in July's Media & Learning Newsletter. Mathy Vanbuel writes 'Film in Action is a practical guide for all those in education who believe in the educational advantages of moving images in language learning and who are looking for arguments to adopt this and for activities or inspiration to start doing it themselves.' Read the review in full here.

Heads Up - Spoken English for Business by Mark Tulip, Louise Green and Richard Nicholas has received an excellent review in the ELTAS Summer 2015 News. Gary Anello says of Level 1 'The book hits the ground running and has students speaking right away - a major asset when dealing with learners of business English. The emphasis is really on their talking about the work they do, not on the work the coursebook presumes they do. The units are short and the learners complete a specific task at the end of each one, allowing for good focused practice in each of the areas the unit covers.' Read the rest of the review here.

23rd August is the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, marking the night of the insurrection in Saint-Domingue that played a crucial role in putting an end to the transatlantic slave trade.

Join Cambridge Scholars Publishing in commemorating this day, designated by UNESCO, not only to remember those who were subjected to the slave trade, but also to recognise that slavery still exists in certain areas of the world today.
