Hi Hania,
As you know, often times students with disabilities require flexibility in their education options. As online learning technologies have improved greatly over the last ten years, the opportunities for students with disabilities to learn online have grown significantly. Most recently there has been a move by the nation's most respected universities and colleges (not-for-profit) to launch online degree programs that provide flexibility and affordability. Universities such as Oregon State, University of Illinois, and Penn State are fantastic examples of how traditional colleges can adapt to meet changing needs of the student population.
We created a search page that allows students to find and research non-profit, accredited online colleges by state, subject, religious affiliation, and other specialties:
www.affordablecollegesonline.org/online-colleges/
You can read a little more about our organization below. Our mission is to get these free community education resources into the hands of future students. Do you think you could help by listing our rankings as a web resource?
I noticed you list the Accredited Online Colleges website on old.hltmag.co.uk/dec13/lett.htm
This might be a perfect location to list our resource, but feel free to list it elsewhere if you have a more appropriate page.
Our online learning resource is also a guide to our website as a resource for current and future students and families, especially those with disabilities.
About Us: Affordable Colleges Foundation came to be in 2011 with the mission to provide strategies and information about pursuing an affordable higher education. Our free community resource and tools span topics such as financial-aid and college savings strategies, affordability and scorecard rankings, opportunities for Veterans and people with disabilities, and online learning resources. We have been featured by nearly 500 top universities in the United States, Canada, and the UK along by several many state and local government organizations.
It would be helpful if you could add our online learning resource guide to your website as a resource for current and future students and families, especially those with disabilities. Is this something you can do to help support this initiative? You can see my original email below for information and can find the resource here:

Thank you,
Dan Schuessler

Dear Hania Kryszewska,
Last month, the Cambridge Scholars Editorial Advisory Board Meeting was hosted at The Groucho Club in London and included an inspirational presentation from our guest speaker, digital publishing expert, David Worlock. David discussed the future of digital communication in academic publishing, and stimulated a lively debate amongst the members of the Board about the direction in which we will be taking the Press in the forthcoming year. Please click here to read his thoughts on the subject.
Looking forward to this month, the World Cup will return to Brazil for the first time in over 60 years and the eyes of the world will be on it. Brazilians are passionate about their "futebol" and revel in the expectation that they will win an unparalleled sixth World Cup title. Yet, there is much controversy about the billions of dollars of public money being invested in the event, leading many to question “Copa para quem? A World Cup for whom?” A complex narrative for a diverse country – economically, socially and culturally. To celebrate the world’s fifth largest economy, we are offering our readers a 50% discount on 3 of our best-selling titles related to South America. For more information, please click here.
Our June discount campaigns, with a time-limited discount of up to 60%, include:
Book of the Month – this month’s must-read is ‘Society Building: A China Model of Social Development’, edited by Xianggun Chang. Deemed “a timely book…clear, hybrid and scholarly”, this title has been receiving extensive critical acclaim from the academic community. To find out more and receive a 60% discount, please click here.
The Editorial Panel’s ‘Recommended Reads’ – our in-house Editorial Panel have selected their pick of our best-selling and critically acclaimed titles, at 50% discount. Please click here to view the selection.
New Releases – be the first to know about our new and noteworthy titles. Our Editors have hand-picked 6 titles that are generating a buzz, spanning the following subjects: Linguistics, Religion, Language and Literature, Women’s Studies and History. Best of all, these are reduced up to 50%. Please click on our homepage to view the selection.
Happy reading!

Dear Teacher,
The fourth “Speak Up Explains…” video has just been published, looking at a rather controversial word which is almost always misused by Italian learners – you can watch this, and the previous three, here. There are two new videos every month, and, to coincide with their visit to Rome in a few weeks, The Rolling Stones’ (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction will be online on the19th June.
This is also this month’s first addition to the Downloadable Worksheets page of www.tuneintoenglish.com – written by regular contributor Mena Bianco from Naples, this looks at the Present Continuous for narration.
Many of you will be visiting the U.K. capital this summer, so the second addition is London Calling by The Clash. This was submitted by Maria Gulczynska from Ancona. (You and your students might also enjoy Tune Into London, our visit in 2012.)
The Drifters had a 1962 hit with Up On The Roof, the ideal place for city dwellers to spend their summer days – this worksheet focuses on prepositions and was written by Henrietta Flinn in Paris. (Here’s my roof in Naples, where I will be spending some time this month!)
Thank you to all teachers who have submitted worksheets – I look forward to receiving your contributions in the future.
This year’s Tune Into English Roadshow had its final performance on 30th May, wrapping up a season of 144 performances in 85 schools in 69 towns and cities in 2 countries. (There will be a final performance in Perth, Scotland in July). Thank you to all who have hosted the Roadshow this year, and for all the wonderful feedback I have had – you can check out the comments here. You can see photographs from over seven years of the Roadshow on the Tune facebook page.
Teachers at the Scuola Superiore di I° Grado may be interested in Up To You!, ELI’s holiday book, consolidating and revising vocabulary and structures presented during the year. Written by Kavanagh and Morris, you can read more about this here.
The Karaoke page of Tune Into English features over 9,000 songs. Don’t forget that you can sing along with the UK Top 10 Charts on the Speak Up site – updated weekly; there is a link on the Tune Home page too.
With the warm weather now here, what better time to add the Tune Into English T-shirt to your wardrobe? Made of high quality material and featuring the Tune logo, this is available here. Remember, a 48-page worksheet based on the film Once, an Irish love story with a difference, and the 95-page e-book Notes from an ELT Consultant are available to download on the site.
Don’t forget to tell your students about the Tune Into English Drawing Competition - we have received some wonderful pictures, and look forward to receiving more of your students’ (or even your own!) masterpieces!
As many of you may be aware I used to work on the radio – my first experience was with Radio Tour in the year 2000 and, in an effort to digitalise my cassette tapes, I have put a large selection of my shows online.
One month to go before the holidays! The Tune Into English newsletter will return in September, but in the meantime check out the facebook page for updates. Have a great Summer – you deserve it!
Best wishes,
Fergal Kavanagh

Dear Hania,
(…) On average, language teachers spend approximately 260 hours a year marking papers. A conservative calculation translates this into 35 full workdays a year! Marking papers takes up a considerable amount of time in a teacher’s work life and often in their personal life as well.
Language Corrector is an innovative marking and feedback system, an add-on to Microsoft Word that helps teachers save time but at the same time to provide very precise and customised feedback to their students. Our users estimate that they save approximately 30% of their time, which can be turned into 11 workdays saved!
What do you think about it?
Let me know if you are interested in hearing more.
Kind regards,
Diana Voru

Dear colleague,
Over 200 people, including you, have helped us develop the Disabled Access Friendly campaign from what started as a tiny idea into an important campaign with global impact. We hope you are proud to be part of this initiative.
Last week in London, the British Council announced the winners of the prestigious ELTons awards, and we are proud to announce that the Disabled Access Friendly campaign was the winner in the category of “Innovation in Teacher Resources”. The annual ELTons awards are a celebration of innovation and excellence in English language teaching (ELT) from around the world.
Congratulations! This award belongs to everyone who has been part of the team. You can see a video clip of the awards here (the winning annoucement and our acceptance speech comes at 1:32:33).
This award is a great honour and a significant endorsement of our work and we would like to thank you for your contribution. We couldn’t have done it if we hadn’t all pulled together! All of us involved in this initiative are volunteers and everyone’s contribution is important. Some of you have contributed by doing photocopies; others by promoting our work at major ELT events, and in between there are a thousand other ways in which kind people like you have helped to get the Disabled Access Friendly campaign where it is today.
In 2013, 19,000 individual EFL teachers from over 100 countries visited our site. If you estimate how many students those teachers may have reached, you will get an idea of the kind of impact we have had in raising awareness about mobility disability via the EFL classroom.
Thank you so much for being a part of this great voluntary team effort and we hope that we can count on your continued active involvement and support.
With best wishes
Katie Quartano and Paul Shaw
for the Disabled Access Friendly team
