EDITORIAL

Dear HLT Readers,

Welcome to the August issue of HLT. We are enjoying a Pilgrims summer in Canterbury: fascinating courses, great company, lovely location and pleasant weather. Remember, if you did not make it this summer, you can always attend an autumn or spring course. They dates will be announced soon so watch this space for more information click here

You can find out even more about Pilgrims if you invite a Pilgrims trainer to your country to give some taster sessions offering a flavor of Pilgrims. There are benefits for the teachers who attend these sessions as well as for the organizer. You can find more information in the article Pilgrims Needs Your Expertise!

Autumn is the time when many conferences take place. Pilgrims trainers will be attending the Fisher International Conference in Bucharest, Romania, IATEFL Poland in Szczecin, and many others. Do not forget to look us up when you attend any of these conferences.

If you would like to know about the C Group presence at conferences read BAAL Language Learning and Teaching SIG & IATEFL Research SIG in collaboration with the Open University, UK: Conference on Creativity in Language Learning and Teaching Research and The C Group at IATEFL 2017. Also we hope to give you more information soon on the Bonnie Tsai Scholarship. As for the C Group contribution to this issue of HLT, don’t miss Let Me Not To the Creations of Young Minds Admit Impediments byRebeca Duriga. Finally note that the latest ETAS Journal special issue, Creativity in the Language Classroom, features many of the C Group members, including Jill Hadfield, Charlie Hadfield, Marjorie Rosenberg, Dinna Blanco-Ioannou, Jamie Keddie, Daniel Xerri, and Kevin Stein.

The articles in this issue fall into two distinct subject groups: English language teaching (ELT) and general background reading on Neuro Linguistic Programming, (NLP) which is applicable to ELT.

For those interested in communication in a foreign language there are four articles: How to Make One’s Communication Ambiguity-Free? A Critical Study in the Light of Structural Linguistics in ESL Context by S. Joseph Arul Jayraj, Classroom-based Approaches to Learner Autonomy in a Japanese English Conversation School by Daniel Hooper, Communication Versus Correctness in the EFL Classroom by Steve Mullen, and Breaking the Ice with Likes and Dislikes by Zoya Kozlova.

Secondary school teachers will surely be interested in The Use of L1 and the Attitudes of Students and Teachers Towards It in Chinese Secondary School Context by Ji Lingzhu and Zhao Jing, and History of Canterbury Cathedral – Lesson Plan by Aleksandra Zaparucha.

Then there are two articles on teaching at academic level: Exposure to and Focus on GSL, AWL and BNL Words and Use of Online Tools Can Contribute to the Quality of Academic Writing by Nilgun Hancioglu Eldridge and Sezgi Yalin, and Integrating Extensive Reading into an Academic Curriculum by Stephen O’Connor.

There is more on using literature in the language classroom: Using Literature in the Language Classroom: An Integrated Approach by Carol Griffiths, and Using Literature in the Language Classroom: Using a Modern Novel The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, Safa Nasher and Carol Griffiths. I am happy to let you know that in the coming issues there will be more on using literature in the classroom. All the texts are the result of Carol Griffith’s work with her pre-service teachers; the series will be called Using Literature in the Language Classroom.

For HLT readers who are interested in using ICT in language classes there are two articles: Introducing a New Online Tool: eLesson Inspirations on Global Issues by Bill Templer, and Pre-Service Teachers – MA Students at University of Gdańsk, Poland, Review Books on Using ICT in Language Teaching (2).

In this isssue you will find a lot of information on recent publications. There are two author’s reviews: A Practical Introduction to Teacher Training in ELT by John Hughes – Author Review, and 100 Teaching Tips: Author Review by Penny Ur. You can also read about various new publications in Short Book Reviews by Hanna Kryszewska, New Books from Routledge, Understanding Leadership by Libby Nicholas and John West-Burnham, Crown House Publishing, and Teacher Stories: Stories from the Edges of Language Teaching edited by Paul Walsh and Theresa Gorman. Also some letters in the Letters section refer to publications HLT readers and friends would like to share.

Readers interested in NLP will certainly enjoy a remarkable series of articles by Gabriel Suciu: Timelines, Frames and Reframing, NLP and the Changing Process, The Body and the Mind are Systemic Processes, Epilogue: Love Story, and The Map is Not the Territory. There will be more on NLP from Gabriel Suciu in 2017.
