You had a dream
Am I lying?

Introduction

Chris, of fond memory, edited the highly successful Addison Wesley publications ‘Recipes for Tired Teachers’ ( 1985 ) and, some years later “ More Recipes for Tired Teachers’. Here you have a couple of Chris’s own contributions to the 1985 book.

Introduction

  • Send a buoyant, extrovert student out of the class.
  • Tell the rest of the class that when their classmate comes back he will be told that he has had a dream which he had forgotten but which the class knows as they are all clairevoyants!
    The classmate will ask them questions about his dream. If his question ends with the letter A E I O U or Y they chorus YES. If it ends in a consonant they chorus NO!
  • Call the “dreamer” back into the room and explain to him that the class knows the dream he had last night but that he has totally forgotten it. He is to ask them questions to find out what he dreamt.
  • Continue until the dreamer has sussed out the system the class are using to decide on their replies.

You can play the game many times each time using different coding systems.
So, the class might say YES if the final word in the question has up to five letters in it and NO if it has six or more.

  • Bring a picture into class, preferably a surrealistic one, but do not show it to the class.
    Describe the picture either truthfully or falsely. Let the group quiz you about the details. They then vote on whether they think your are telling porkies or not, justifying their opinions.
    Show them the picture!
