AN OLD EXERCISE

Group building of questions and answers

Primary secondary adult
Silvia Stephan
Recorded by Mario Rinvolucri

1. Divide your class into groups of 8-10 students.

2. Within the groups ask them to split into two sub-groups, A and B, facing each other.

3. Demonstrate the exercise with groups of 8-10:

Tell sub-group A that they are to ask sub-group B a question

Each student from sub-group A may only supply one word; eg:

Student A : Do
Student B: you
Student C: want
Student D: to
Student E: go
Student A: to
Student B: Timbucktoo?

Each student supplies her word spontaneously- the students do not "plan" the sentence.

Sub-group B now answers their question in the same spontaneous way.

Get all the groups playing their question and answer game.

Note: this exercise tends to provoke plenty of laughter, which is a brilliant thing to have in a classroom.

Silvia Stephan demonstrated this activity in an evening session at Pilgrims, Canterbury, in August 2005.
