Boredom

1.What percentage of your time at school do you find boring?

John: 80%

2. If you are interested in the subject and the teacher is boring do you still enjoy your lessons?

John: No

3. Can an interesting teacher make a boring subject interesting for you?

John: to a certain extent, yes.

4. What type of activities in the foreign language lesson do you find interesting/boring?

John: in French found almost everything boring, but the teacher was funny.

5. What are some of the personal behaviours of a boring teacher?

John: constant talking and lecturing.

6. Do you think your feeling of boredom is a result of outside influences or something that starts from within you?

John: within.

7. To what extent do you feel that your sense of boredom is your own responsibility?

John: the feeling isn't my responsibility. Overcoming it is.

8. To what extent do you think your teacher should "entertain" you?

John: as much as possible!

9. When you are bored, what strategies, if any, do you employ to overcome the feeling?

John: completely switch off and enter a Zen-like trance.

10. What other feelings are close to boredom for you?

John: anger, feeling down.

[Editorial note: John has recently moved out of studying for A levels and gone into paid employment. ]
