Time as I see it

Level: intermediate to advanced

  • Ask your students to draw these things:
      A sundial
      An egg-timer
      The sun in the sky
      A church tower clock
      A digital watch

  • Tell them to compare their drawings with neighbours.

  • Put these sentence stems on the board and ask each student, working on their own, to choose between 6 and 8 stems they like and complete each of these stems three different ways. Tell them to write in two more sentence stems of their own and complete these three times. :

    Being early is………….

    Being on time makes me feel…….

    Being late is due to……..

    Living without a watch can be……

    The time relation between the talkative and the silent part of my day is……

    On my inner clock the half way point in the day is…….

    Time passes differently depending on………

    One of my favourite times of day is………………… because ………

    Time is distance in that………

    I can think forward as far as…………..

    I see my past clearly, except…..

    A waste if time is……

    Time is a strange fantasy because…..

  • Group the students in threes to compare their sentence completions.

  • Allow time for a short general feedback session.
