Letter 1

Hello good people. It’s been a while!

I've just posted a new activity on Lessonstream that I think you will like:

Click here for ‘Street questions’ on Lessonstream

The activity involves a series of linguistic landscape photographs that I took while I was training on my video and image course in Manchester last month.

Secondly, a bit of news about my book ‘Videotelling’. The manuscript is complete and we are currently at the copy editing process. That should take a few weeks and then it will be on to design. It’s taken considerably longer than expected but it’s all worth it – it’s going to be an excellent book.

Have a good end of week / weekend ... Jamie Keddie :)

Letter 2

I hope your week has been going well. I'm wondering if you have had time to review the guide to college students with disabilities I sent your way recently.

If not, no worries, I have included it again here:
www.edsmart.org/students-with-disabilities-college-guide/

EDsmart.org's "Winning in College: A Guide for Students with Disabilities". The guide covers topics such as transitioning into college, rights of students with disabilities, disability documentation, scholarships, choosing the right school, and many other helpful resources for students with disabilities.

We would be honored if you include our guide.

Will you consider including this next to your letter resources to support students with disabilities? I hope to hear from you soon.

Thank you,

Hello

My name is Lorcan McNamee, I have just published a novel set in the world of English language teaching which I thought might interest the readers of your website or magazine.

The novel is called A Year in Lisbon and the website is here. It is set in the world of EFL in Lisbon, Portugal, where I myself lived and worked as an EFL teacher in the nineties.

Many of the themes will be familiar to anyone who has lived and worked in a foreign country: the joys and challenges of adapting to a new environment; life among a sometimes closed community of ex-pats; the everyday ups and downs of a newly qualified English teacher.

If you need any other information about the book, do not hesitate to contact me.

Regards

Lorcan McNamee

From Francisco Gomes de Matos, a peace linguist, Recife,Brazil

The right to communicative respect: A Checklist for language users

Introduction:

Respect -- yes, mutual respect -- are among the most important concepts in the coherent study of:
human relations, social psychology,
discourse analysis, language policy, and
first and second language education.
In the emerging branch of linguistics known as Peace Linguistics, Be Respectful! is an equally essential principle in everyday constructive interaction.
One way to help language users to apply that basic assumption lies in compiling a list of violations of respect, and by asking oneself if one can avoid disrespectful uses of language, as well as defining the ways one can avoid doing so.

Here is an open-ended Checklist for such purposes. Readers are asked to add to it, discuss it, and probe it in various contexts:

Learning to use language(s) respectfully, we should avoid:

1- cursing
2- debasing others
3- defaming
4- defriending
5- degrading
6- dehumanizing
7- demeaning
8- demoralizing
9- denigrating
10- deprecating
11- depreciating
12- discriminating
13- disdaining
14- disparaging
15- disrespecting
16- humiliating
17- insulting
18- making fun of
19- mocking
20- offending
21- ridiculing
22- slandering
23- stereotyping

Revealingly, to insult first appeared in written English in 1560. When did it first appear in other written languages?

The adjective respectful made its written debut in English in 1590, while disrespectful originated in 1605.

In their inspiring book Words on Words: Quotations about Language and Languages (2000), David and Hilary Crystal quote a German proverb – “To kill with words is also murder,” thus helping people to understand killing communicatively, constitutes a formidable challenge to language users everywhere.

Herein lies an additional mission for applied linguists, language educators and parents.
