Background
Poems
The poems included in this section were written by students of English Based on Literary Texts Course taught at Masaryk University Language Centre in autumn 2015. For their creative writing, the students were inspired by the famous villa Tugendhat, a UNESCO protected masterpiece of modern architecture in Brno, Czech Republic, as well as by its description in Simon Mawer´s novel Glassroom. At first, excerps from the book were discussed in the class, then the students took a virtual tour through the villa and expressed their impressions in poetical texts. The students agreed that their poems will be published in this section anonymously.
1
Light is going through the plants
No one knows where it ends
As time passes by, you will miss
This morning bliss.
2
Sun shower
Like morning dew
Attacking curtains
Transparent light that leaks
And swallows ghosts of the worried past
Still present within emptied space
3
Straight, clear lines
Going far like a highway
No limitations
Except for those in your mind
Which is still curved
Adventurous and complicated
Unnecessarily complicated
Like your ancestors´ caves
4
Playing its games between the leaves
Glittering on the street
And then fully and brightly shining through the glass
Like there’s no barrier
5
When the sun is shining,
It is like coffee in the morning.
It´s warming like a blanket,
Like a hot bath after a long day.
6
Light is like heaven.
So huge and beautiful.
Light is never ending space.
There´s no other place to feel full.
7
The sun can´t hide.
It just exists.
It is as white as milk.
You can´t hide.
You just appear.
You are as bright as glass.
8
Light is so clear
As dark as night
It may be warm or cold
Whatever you want.
The light in villa Tugendhat
Makes my eyes hurt
But I don´t care
It´s excellent.
9
Light makes you feel happy, free.
It gives us hope for better days
It makes everything bigger
More beautiful, brighter.
There´s nothing like light
Nothing can replace it.
