EDITORIAL

Dear HLT Readers,

Welcome to the December 2015 issue of HLT. As usual you can read about our plans in Pilgrims News. I hope you are already planning for 2016 and choosing Pilgrims courses which you could attend thanks to the Erasmus+ project. You can find out about our courses for 2016 on our website at
www.pilgrims.co.uk/page/?title=2016+Courses%2C+Dates+and+Fees&pid=261
Please note we have a new logo, so don’t be surprised when you see it…

next to our new address: Suite 1B, Orchard House, Orchard Street, Canterbury, Kent CT2 8AP, United Kingdom.

The Teacher Trainer Journal, our sister magazine (both the TTTJ and Humanising Language TeachingHLTmag are sponsored by Pilgrims), is celebrating 30 years of its presence in the ELT world. It holds a very special place as there are no similar publications exclusively aimed at teacher trainers, written by teacher trainers and trainers of trainers. TTTJ is a platform where trainers and prospective trainers can meet, get a good overview of the map of the field, share their ideas and views, and catch up on the developments in the field. Below you can read a message from Tessa Woodward, TTTJ Editor.

The Teacher Trainer Journal has something to celebrate! The year 2016 marks our 30th Volume. Yes, we have been going for 30 years!

In 1986 we sent out our first, complimentary, 12 page, pilot newsletter to friends and contacts. We were hoping to establish a paper place where teacher trainers could talk to each other and take a peek at each other’s work. Thirty years later, with the same editor, we have a professional publication with an international readership and a huge resource bank of ideas, book reviews, and series of interest to teacher trainers, teacher educators and teacher mentors. If you would like to see what has been published so far and read some sample articles, or would like to subscribe to either the paper or on line version of the journal, take a look at our web site at:

And why not come and join us for our birthday year!

As for HLT itself, in the August 2015 issue I was happy to share with you the news that an article about writing for HLT by Stefan Rathert and Zühal Okan has been publised in ELT Journal. The link to the article is below but unfortunately you have to pay to be able to read it: http://eltj.oxfordjournals.org/content/early/2015/05/26/elt.ccv029.full

The great news is that Huw Jarvis, the editor of tesolacademic.org, gave Stephan the opportunity to present his article on writing for HLT in a video talk which you can you can watch at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxWAZO1bRFI&feature=youtu.be

Also I would like to let you know about two competitions organized by the C Group; note the deadline to enter the competitions is December 10th 2015, so you haven’t got much time. You can read about them in: Competition for C group Logo and Competition: Creative Drawing /Writing Exercise, animated by Rakesh Bhanot. For more ideas on creativity read When Creativity is Dangerous by Chaz Pugliese, a C Group member, Story Cubes – an Innovative and Creative Board Game – Perfect for EFL Teaching by Andreja Drašler Zorič, Haikus for Teaching Grammar to EFL/ESL Students and other Second Language Students, by George Bradford Patterson II, and . Creative Writing of Engineering Students: A Case Study in Abu Dhabi Polytechnic by Ali Ata Alkhaldi and Jennifer Benaggoun.

Earlier this year the British Council published 'Creativity in the English Language Classroom', a collection of 19 chapters chosen from over 200 proposals submitted. For more details seee this link to a recent blog post:

Please do not forget that you can download a FREE copy of this BC publication either from the BC's English Agenda (Creativity in the English language classroom)

Creativity in the English language classroom

Edited by Alan Maley and Nik PeacheyThe focus of this book is on practical activities which can help to nurture, develop and motivate our students.

Or Teaching English. (Creativity in the English language classroom)

As for this issue, I would like to start with recommending Adaptive Learning in ELT by Ania Kolbuszewska. Adaptive learning is one of the buzz words at conferences these days and it it is really worth finding out about it more. In fact you might still make it to the Adaptive learning in practice conference and exhibition which will be held on Saturday 5th December, in London. For more read below.

Adaptive learning in practice conference and exhibition

Saturday 5th December 2015, 9am to 4pm
Coin Street Community Conference Centre, 108 Stamford St, London, South Bank, SE1 9NH
What does adaptive learning mean for the future of teaching?

This one day event is essential for anyone who needs to know how adaptive learning will shape the future of English language teaching and for anyone setting up blended learning programmes. Leading ELT author, Philip Kerr who has written widely on adaptive learning in ELT will chair the conference and talk about adaptive possibilities in vocabulary learning. Philip's welcome and introduction will be followed by ELTjam's, Nick Robinson, Laurie Harrison, Jo Sayers and Tim Gifford who will explore what adaptive learning is. View the full speaker line up here.

Running alongside the seminars, there will be an interactive demonstration zone where you can try out adaptive learning in practice

Teachers of young learners will probably want to start reading this issue with Teaching English to Children Through Songs: An Overview by Mai Tran Thi Thanh, and Acquiring Expressions through Texts for Children: Lexical Approach with Young and Very Young Learners by Zhivka Ilieva, while those interested in pronunciation will probably start with The Basis of Pronunciation Ability by Gülin Balıkcıoğlu or Non-NEST Pronunciation in ELT by Jorge Torres Almazán.

In this issue there are a number of articles which will interest teachers who are involved in teacher development and teacher training: Incorporating Critical Thinking in Teacher Education and Professional Development by Masoume Ghavidel, A Narrative Inquiry into Practicing Professional Identity in a Japanese EFL Socio-Educational Context by Keith Ford, Teaching English Paths – a Never Ending Story by Alexandra Sobral e Costa, Lifting Ourselves by our Own Bootstraps by Dave Alton, and Teaching Practice as a Means of Forming Professional Skills of Pre-service Teachers by Albina R. Abdrafikova and Tatiana S. Pimenova.

For practical classroom ideas I would recommend: Pigs Might Fly? and Will you Make a Difference? by Katarzyna Wiącek and Katarzyna Łaziuk

If you would like to find out about new books and publishing, also online, check out the Letters section, Short Book Reviews by Hanna Kryszewska, The Tune Into English Roadshow – the Tenth Anniversary Tour! by Fergal Kavanagh, and New Books from Routledge.
