When I Learn Best… (1)

Anonymous

*
I learn best, on the whole, when I work by myself at home. The 3 subjects I prefer to learn in class are maths, latin and russian. I learn most subjects in the same way, but for chemistry, physics and biology I read what I am supposed to learn, write some notes out and learn from that. I generally learn French, Russian and Latin vocabulary better than anything else because I find you can make up a way of remembering a word saying a rhyme whilst you can not do that for many other subjects. I find Russian hard to learn because it has a different alphabet, which sometimes causes problems. I almost always learn by writing out rather than learning in my mind, because I find it easier and quicker when I write it out.

I learn best when I am being told what the thing is. I am not very good at taking in facts when I am reading from a book because I get bored very easily. I am now able to learn with greater care because when I was younger I was always rushing through things to go out and play with my friends. I do not learn all the subjects in the same way e.g. for history I learn by listening to the teacher, but for geography I learn by looking at my jotter. I learn quicker when I am interested in the subject that I am learning. I learn some things better than others depending on my mood., and it also depends on what situation I am in e.g. I learn better when I am on my own with no-one to disturb my thinking and learning.

I learn best in a class with a teacher. The teacher knows how good or bad you are i.e. how much you can learn at one time. TV normally produce that normally are too simplistic. Books cannot explain anything that you may not understand. In a class you can see how well you are doing by comparing with other people’s work and ideas. On the other hand it is easier to make notes from books. You have the time to take in what you are writing: copying from the board, you may take less in, concentrating on getting the words down. However some teachers make np notes at all; expecting you to write down what he is saying is not enough. Good notes in all subject are necessary.

Teachers must give variety in their lessons, as working on the same subject (topic) for hours on end becomes boring. Test are good, if they are not too frequent. They allow you to see how well you are doing when compared to the rest of the class, as well as the teacher. Not too much emphasis should be placed on marks and positions though. Double periods are good in all subjects; valuable time is wasted between single periods. More can be done in a double
