Reading

Read the following story and fill in the gaps with the prepositions: up, around, from, on, to, through, in, with, of, at, back.

A Ball in the Kitchen

It was midnight when I woke ¬¬(1)___. The strange noises reminding catcall and coming (2)___ the old kitchen could wake (3)___ a dead man. I turned (4)___ the light, got (5)___, put my dressing-gown (6)___ and hurried (7)___ the kitchen. I looked (8)_____ the key hole. What I saw made my blood run cold (9)___ my veins.

My old pot, kind-hearted and blackened (10)__ smoke and soot, was playing the role (11)___ drums. The whisk (12)___ a wooden handle and the vegetable brush were tapping (13)___ it producing loud sounds with a sort (14)___ rhythm. The used mincer was swinging its handle (15)___ and forth creaking dreadfully. I should have oiled it ages ago! The saltcellar and the pepper-pot were shaking themselves adding their specific sounds (16)___ that cacophony. That funny band was standing (17)___ the table while nearly all my kitchen utensils were... dancing! It was hard to believe, but sugar spoons were dancing (18)___ fish and salad forks while bread knife was hugging lovingly the butter curler. The draining spoon preferred the ladle (19)___ a red handle, the potato masher was dancing in time of “music” (20)___ the skimmer, and the tall and handsome spatula (21)___ the tongs. They all were whirling (22)___ the air making a lot (23)___ additional noise but they seemed to enjoy the dance.

I pulled the door-handle but, to my great surprise, the door was shut. I tried harder but with no result again. The door would not open! But that made the orchestra and the dancers suspicious. Suddenly the music stopped and I heard some whispers. I looked (24)____ the key hole once more. They all stood (25)___ a group (26)___ the middle (27)___ the kitchen looking (28)___ the door (29)___ a fright. Then they rushed (30)___ their shelves, drawers and hooks. The ball was over.

(31)___ the morning I woke (32)___ (33)___ a terrible headache. I slept awfully and... yes, I had a dream, a nightmarish dream. I dreamt that all my kitchen utensils had a ball... . I jumped (34)___ my feet and ran (35)___ the kitchen. I opened the door (36)___ a loud slam and I looked (37)_____. Everything (38)___ my kitchen was (39)___ a perfect state. Everything, but the bread knife and the butter curler. They looked as if they were still hugging each other (40)___ a dance of love...
