Student corpus

Before Class: No preparation required
Aim: pooling student corpus, revision or recycling language
Time: 15 minutes

Procedure:

  1. 1. Write one word the blackboard: at the top in the middle, e.g.:
    at

  2. Tell the students to think about expressions with the word "at". Show them how to write the expressions
    at home
    look at
    at five o'clock
    looking at me

  3. Students work in pairs and then bigger groups and compare their chunks.

  4. Students produce a class corpus in poster form and display in class.

  5. Repeat with another word, a noun or verb for a change.

Variations:

1. Instead of producing a poster, students can write their chunks on the blackboard, each student contributes one.
2. Students look through the course book and look for chunks with the word given by the teacher.

Rationale: Students explore the different contexts in which a word can appear and its various meanings
