Humanising Language Teaching Thinking about Linguistics? Think about Durham! Applied Linguistics (ELT) Department of Linguistics And English Language University of Durham Elvet Riverside II New Elvet Durham DH1 Tel. +44 (0) 191 374 2641 The Department of Linguistics and English Language is extremely small and friendly. On this year's MA, for example, there are only about 20 students. They come from many countries such as Japan, Korea, Germany, Columbia, Yemen, Hong Kong and England. All of this creates a unique learning experience where everyone gets to know each other and work together. The department's lecturers are experienced individuals who have published widely. There are great study facilities here too. These include many first class libraries and computer rooms. This has played a key role in The Times rating it as one of the country's top five linguistics departments. The list includes Cambridge, Edinburgh and Lancaster Universities respectively. Durham is a truly inspirational place to live and study. Durham Cathedral, which was voted as Britain's most beautiful building by Radio 4's listeners, flavours everywhere. Its bells can be heard singing daily. The enchanting River Wear cuts lazily though the city, passing by steep banks of lush green trees. It doesn't take long to walk or cycle along the river's edge and be out in the countryside. As an EFL/ESOL teacher with a few years of experience, my MA has definitely helped me link the worlds of academia and language teaching. It has opened doors and has given me the skills necessary to walk through these doors confidently. Furthermore, I have thoroughly enjoyed studying here. Taught postgraduate degrees include: MA Applied Linguistics; MA Applied Linguistics (ELT), (ELT, CALL & Educational Technology), (ELT & Materials Development), (ESOL), (ESP), (Foreign Language Teaching for Arabic, French, German, Japanese or Spanish), (Translation); MA Language Acquisition; MA Linguistics. Research degrees include: PhD, Mlitt & MA. There are possibilities to study full-time (9 or 12 months) or part-time (24 months).
