Dear HLT Readers

Welcome to the April issue of HLT. I hope many of you have had good news and you have received an EU grant to come to Pilgrims. We are really looking forward to welcoming you in Canterbury. For more about Pilgrims look up Pilgrims News and Alphabet Games: a Pilgrims Training Session by Hania Kryszewska article by Peter Clements. Pilgrims trainers are involved in many interesting projects, one of them is InPath – Intelligent Pathways for Better Inclusion; for more read InPath Newsletter. Pilgrims trainers and staff will also attend the 47th Annual IATEFL Conference in Liverpool. If you are going to attend the conference too, please come to the Pilgrims stand or to one of our talks.

At the conference I will be looking out for new publications and then review them for you in HLT. In this issue Short Book Reviews are devoted exclusively to publications aimed at students who are preparing for IELTS. The IELTS market is getting stronger and stronger as increasing numbers of students are interested in studying in the UK or studying in English in other countries; in most cases IELTS is a must. This trend is reflected on the publishing market as publishers respond to this growing interest and need. For more news about new ELT materials read The eHandbook by Mark Addison, ELTeach by George White, and Guidelines for Teachers on How to Use the Disabled Access Friendly Campaign’s Free EFL Graded Reading Texts Raising Awareness About Mobility Disability by Katie Quartano. Also don’t miss two contributions introducing very interesting publications which soon will be available: New iPad Coursebook Fuses Innovative ESL/EFL Pedagogy to “Multi-Touch” Environment by Roger Grover and The Strategy Factor in Successful Language Learning by Carol Griffith by Adem Soruç.

In this issue a number of articles are devoted to teaching writing and related issues: Some Tips For Teaching L2 Academic Writing by Maria Virginia Mulone, Collaborative Writing by Robin Usher, Controlled Writing: An Effective Traditional Practice for Developing ELLs’ Composition by Eman Elturki, and Writing Essays: Process, Feedback and Assessment by Nilgun Hancioglu Eldridge and Sezgi Yalin.

Another theme in this issue is using L1 and L2 in a language class: L1 in the L2 Classroom. Yeah or Nay?, by Dave Alton, and The Use of Students’ First Language in the EFL Classroom in Korea by Seong Man Park. A number of articles come from learning environments we normally do not read about. I am sure you will find the following articles fascinating: Dangerous Poetry: Across the Cultural Divide by David C. Deller, Children of the Revolution: After the Arab Spring by Neil Mc Beath,, and Through the Eyes of a Writer: A Journey of Learning, Discovering, and Transforming: Part 2 by Entisar Elsherif.

Those who teach young learners will surely enjoy: Humanising Parent-Teacher Conferences by Tony Cañadas, Teaching Diversity to Young Learners (With a Sample Lesson) by Nino Mikeladze, and Helping Students In Time by Robin Usher,

Conference Announcement and Call for Abstracts

19 – 20 September 2013

The Faculty of Logistics, University of Maribor, Celje, Slovenia

Globalisation and intercultural communication are the two important phenomena that characterize contemporary society and labour market. Consequently, good command of foreign languages has become an essential competence of professionals from all walks of life. In response to the ever increasing need for good foreign language skills, researchers and practitioners constantly strive to enhance the teaching and learning process as well as adapt it to the current needs and trends.

Logistics being intrinsically global in its nature, The Faculty of Logistics at the University of Maribor with the support of domestic and foreign researchers and practitioners strives to foster the exchange and dissemination of expertise and good practice in foreign language teaching and learning. To this end we are organising the 6th International Language Conference on the Importance of Learning Professional Foreign Languages for Communication between Cultures, which will take place at the Faculty of Logistics in Celje from 19 to 20 September 2013.

Practitioners, researchers and postgraduate students interested in joining the discussion on current and emerging trends in foreign language teaching and learning are welcome to submit proposals for papers or workshops or join the conference as a listener.
