COURSE OUTLINE

2010 April courses

Many HLT readers will be fully aware of the July-August, Northern Hemisphere Summer courses that we run and a number of you will have already been on one or other of them. In 2009 around 900 people gathered over the summer on our Hilltop overlooking the city of Canterbury.

For 2010 we have expanded the number of courses we offer in the week running up to Western Christian Easter, the week of March 28th to April 3rd. This year you have a choice between:

Creative Methodology in the Classroom
British Life language and Culture
CLIL (teaching other subjects through English)
Train-the-Trainer ( how to improve as a teacher trainer)

[ To find out more about these courses’ academic content go to www.pilgrims.co.uk ]

For some people the smaller overall size of the Easter programme is more congenial than the thrilling, swirling crowds that gather in July and August. The teaching groups tend to be less crowded and so you get more individual attention from your trainer. The rhythm tends to be quieter, less heady and more thoughtful.

The training centre where you work is in the shadow of Canterbury Cathedral, the St Peter’s of the Anglican Church, where Archbishop Thomas Beckett was murdered at the behest of the king. You are right in the centre of one of UK’s prettiest mediaeval town centres. Shopping for presents for your family is much easier than for people who come in the summer ( I write this sort of trivia and I am meant to be a serious academic…..Oooops!)

If you come on a Spring course you will be lodged with a host family rather than in University accommodation which for many people counts as a enrichment of their stay. (If you can’t bear the thought being in a host family the alternative is B+B accommodation.)

A final plus for these courses is that you can come to us for the week before Easter and then go straight on to Scarborough in Yorkshire the following week to attend the huge IATEFL International Conference. This allows you to enjoy two very different parts of England, Kent and Yorkshire.

I will be teaching on these Spring Courses and very much hope to welcome you and get to know some of you.
