Dinosaur Search

National Geographic
Edited by Rob Waring (series editor)
Thomson/ Heinle
ISBN-13: 978-1-4240-1070-7

Characteristics: A new series of readers accompanied by original video material. It is a non-fiction reading series.

„Dinosaurs Search” – it’s a very good book, but I wish it were longer. Dinosaurs are still a mystery for us. This book is very interesting, it has a lot of pictures and a small dictionary. On the first two pages you can do some exercises based on the topic of this book. You can use them when you have a problem. This book tells us about Dr. Sereno and his team searching for dinosaur bones on the Sahara Desert in Nigeria. The team of palaeontologists made an amazing discovery – they discovered bones of super croc – one of the biggest crocodiles in history. I think that this book is very useful, but I prefer more text and less pictures. I thought that this book was quite difficult. Teachers can use this book for children. At the end of this book there is a small test, you can do this if you want and check how much you have learned about dinosaurs and fossils. This book also has a DVD, you can read and then watch the short documentary film about dinosaurs. And you can also only listen, you don’t have to watch or read, you can just listen to the text. It is not the only book from the series about such an interesting topic.

Characteristics: A new series of readers accompanied by original video material. It is a non-fiction reading series.

“A Disappearing World” is a book about the disappearing natural beauty on Earth. It takes place in Congo in Rain Forest. Dr. Fay and a group of people are walking across the Rain Forest and documenting everything. After 15 months of walking they finally see the sea and a beautiful beach. Their trip ends in that place. I really like this book. It was less interesting than previous one (Dinosaur search), but you can hear/read a lot of information. It was a very easy book. It could be a good book for children who would like this topic. For teenagers or adults this book should be longer, less pictures and more difficult. But I really like the pictures in this book, I think that they are really beautiful but you can’t learn anything when you are watching the pictures only. With this book there is also a DVD, so if you don’t want to read the text you can watch the DVD because there is the same text which is in the book. This video material was developed by National Geographic Digital Media. This book is on pre-intermediate level so it is not so difficult as it could be for me. This book was edited by Rob Waring, he also edited other books. There is a series of books edited by this man.
