Dear HLT Readers,

welcome to the April issue of HLT. I will start my Editorial with some more great news. HLT has now become part of OpenJ-Gate.

Soon, I hope, it will be also part of EBSCO database. The registration is in progress. So as you can see more and more readers can access our magazine and if you publish in HLT, you are more and more likely to be read and noticed.

At Pilgrims we are busy making plans for the summer and getting ready to welcome you. We hope we will be able to welcome many of you in the summer and autumn. In Course outline you can read some about our courses in the spring. You can apply now for Comenius funding for Spring 2012 courses. Pilgrims are offering a choice of courses to suit teachers of all levels. Pilgrims Song gives you a humourous insight into what to expect on a Pilgrims course.

As you know we try to promote conferences we think you might enjoy. In this issue it is a YL Conference at the University of Gdańsk, Poland and the TTTJ Conference at Pilgrims. We hope to meet you there.

Modern Methods of Educating Children

(4-5 June 2011 in the building of the Faculty of Law and Administration of GDAŃSK UNIVERSITY ul. Bażyńskiego 6, POLAND)

We invite proposals for papers and workshops concerned with the following issues:

  • Modern technologies for teaching language and speech to children and adults with speech difficulties
  • Use of modern teaching technologies in learning and teaching speech
  • Education in the 21st century
  • The Internet in teaching children
  • Education through art
  • Methods of teaching the mother tongue
  • Methods of teaching foreign languages
  • Bilingual education
  • Media education
  • Teaching children in single-sex schools
  • Other related problems.

The languages of the conference will be Polish and English. We plan to publish extended versions of the material presented in conference papers in book form as a peer-reviewed monograph.

Conference participants will receive a certificate of participation with details of the number of hours devoted to papers and workshops.

There is no conference fee for the participants from abroad.

Summaries of papers and/or workshops (approx. 200 words) and brief biographical notes on presenters should be sent by 30 April 2011.
The conference programme and other information, including addresses of hotels, will be sent to participants in a later communication.
Participants should make their own accommodation arrangements by contacting the hotel by telephone or email. Payment for accommodation will be made directly to the hotel.

In this issue we congratulate the authors of Global their spectacular publishing success. Global has won the English speaking union award for the best book of 2010 and is nominated for a British Council ELTon award for innovation in 2011.

You will find more about the Global course in Short Book Reviews. Also the main author of the course and the brain behind it, Lindsay Clandfield, shares with us some of his ideas on using literature in teaching - A Literary Return. You will find more on the publishing developments in the other reviews: Short Book Reviews and Shamanic Journeys, Shamanic Stories by Michael Berman. Don’t miss the Readers Letters, in which some of you share with us all news about their websites and publishing initiatives.

In this issue you can read three major articles: Stories and Change in Language Teaching by Andrew Wright, Why Use Games in the Language Classroom? by Adam John Simpson, and The Colorful Gifts of Volunteering as a Teacher Trainer in Nepal by Sezgi Yalin. They are different in tone and style but all an excellent read which I recommend.

If you attended our 20th IATEFL Hungary conference in Zánka last year, then let us thank you for doing so and we hope to see you again this year. In case you missed our conference, we look forward to meeting you this year. In either case, please enjoy the video coverage of last year’s conference in Zánka.

Our annual conference this year is to be held in Budapest on 7-9 October 2011. The motto of the event will be „EMPOWER/ED” Shaping learning communities.

The deadline for submitting speaker proposals is 30th April 2011. The deadline for early bird registration is extended this year till 30th June 2011. Please, note that you can get 5 credit points for taking part in the conference.

We hope that the extended early bird registration date will allow you enough time to consider attending our 21st annual conference as a presenter or as a participant. Please find the most important forms attached. All conference documents are available on our website.

We would like to encourage you to take note of this event, participate in it, and make it as widely known as possible.

In this issue we continue the Luxembourg contribution series with Working Towards a Less Mistake-oriented Learning Environment and Assessment Culture by Michel Fandel, and Introducing Portfolios in a Differentiated Classroom as a Means of Favouring Learner Autonomy and Student Reflection by Anne Sier.

You can also find two articles on speaking skills: Teaching Connected Speech by Abdullah Coskun, and Teaching Speaking by Sharon de Hinojosa. More articles from Sharon in the next issues of HLT.

Establishing Rapport with Your Students by Ian Mole, A Reflection on Classroom Observation: A Reminder Regarding Accommodating Different Learning Styles, by Kerry Mullan, and How to Be Flexible and Adapt to Changes? by Rani Innes, all look at our classroom practice and offer some solutions to make our teaching better.

There are many practical classroom activities. Two come from HLT regular contributor, Simon Mumford: Demystifying Academic Written Grammar and Putting Grammar in its Place. There are more ideas in Using Political and Economic Cartoons in the ESP Classroom by Jean Jimenez, Discovering the Norms of Ruringlish by Muhammad Iqbal, and Using Circles in the ELT Classroom, by Michael Berman, also a regular contributor.

CONFERENCE THEME
In 2011 the Teacher Trainer Journal will be 25 years old! We want to celebrate that quarter of a century by bringing together readers, subscribers and contributors to the Teacher Trainer journal, together with new and experienced teach trainers, and those soon to enter the field, so we can share perspectives and practical ideas on teacher education.

On the agenda…..

  • Plenary session on major issues in pre and in-service teacher training
  • Participant presentations and practical workshops with the chance of publication as a follow up
  • ‘Writer’s Workshop’ – Tips on publishing articles on work as a trainer
  • ‘People who Train People’ – A live interview with someone from a parallel field

Proposals Accepted for:

  • ‘An article comes alive!’ – Past contributors to the journal will choose one of their own articles, talk about why they wrote it and invite comments from participants
  • ‘Case Study Hour’ – Participants present a case study based on a work issue and offer it up for analysis and comment by colleagues in small groups
  • The Venue
    The Teacher Trainer 25th Anniversary Conference will be held at the University of Kent, on the hilltop overlooking the beautiful city of Canterbury in the county of Kent – known as the Garden of England. Accommodation can be booked on the campus which has easy transport links into Canterbury and London airports.
